Leadership Is Revealed in the Small Moments

The recent passing of Reverend Jesse Jackson made me reflect on a small moment with him that left a lasting impression on me about humility in leadership.

Several years ago, my husband and I were waiting for a flight at my husband’s small hometown airport. I noticed Reverend Jesse Jackson and his entourage waiting for a plane at our gate—an unexpected sight at such a small airport. We all boarded the small plane to Chicago.

When we landed and began walking down the outdoor ramp, my carry-on luggage got stuck and I had to stop on the tarmac to adjust it. When I turned around, I realized I was holding up Reverend Jackson and his team.

Embarrassed, I apologized.

He smiled warmly and said, “Don’t worry—take your time.”

It was a simple moment, but it stayed with me. Here was a man who had spent decades on the national stage—working alongside leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., founding the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, and even running for president—and yet in that moment he showed nothing but patience, kindness, and humility.

That small interaction reminded me that leadership is not just about vision, influence, or accomplishments. It’s about how you treat people in everyday moments.

In business, the same principle holds true.

The leaders who make the greatest impact are often the ones who:
• Show respect to everyone, regardless of role
• Lead with humility rather than ego
• Understand that small moments shape culture

Humility doesn’t diminish leadership—it strengthens it.

Rev. Jackson’s life was defined by his fight for justice, equality, and opportunity for others. But sometimes the most powerful lessons come from the quiet, human moments that reveal who someone truly is.

This was one of those moments for me.

Rest in peace, Reverend Jesse Jackson.
